Anything Not Everything - Day 5

"For I will do whatever you ask me to do when you ask me in my name. And that is how the Son will show what the Father is really like and bring glory to him. Ask me anything in my name, and I will do it for you!"

John 14:13-14

Whatever we ask? At first glance, this verse seems to make a promise that if we pray for anything “in the name of Jesus,” God will always give us what we ask for. It's easy to read this promise and think, "Jesus, give me that holy hook up!" But there's a difference between our wants and God's ways. We are talking about God on a throne -- not a genie in a bottle.

It's a privilege and a responsibility to pray in the name of Jesus. His name is more than a word; God's name equals his nature. It’s not in his name if it’s not in his nature. So what is his nature, you ask? It's in his nature to heal; it's in his nature to provide; it's in his nature to comfort you -- rescue you, strengthen you, be with you, protect you, bring you peace and joy! Will your request show what God is like? Will it bring glory to him? Ask for whatever is consistent with God's nature, not yours.

Today take the time to pray and ask in Jesus' name -- make your request known to him. He is a loving father ready to incline his ear whenever we call upon him. God always wants what is best for us. Remember, whatever is consistent with God’s nature is ours!
