"Even Though" Faith – Day 1

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus ...

Hebrews 12:1-2

The author of Hebrews compares the Christian life to a race requiring endurance. He doesn't call it a journey where we might take breaks, but a race with an all-out effort from start to finish. We're encouraged to keep going -- especially when life seems like a battle or when there's a struggle that brings us down. Fortunate for us, God’s grace is as broad as it is deep. He's provided not only a way to finish this race, but a cheering squad who've already finished their races, encouraging us to keep going!

Ever felt the power and deafening roar of a crowd cheering and chanting for you? Their thunder can help our form improve, our knees lift a little higher and our pace pick up. A cheer squad lifts our spirits and renews our stamina to keep on trekking! The Hebrews' writer says we're surrounded by just such a squad: a cloud of witnesses made up of men and women of faith who’ve gone before us and run their leg. They beckon us to lighten our load by throwing aside sin and removing subtle distractions that keep us from focusing on Jesus.

Find encouragement today in your faith to run with perseverance and throw aside sin. Ask God for an extra measure of grace to leave sin behind in your life. Leave anything that’s keeping you from full obedience to Jesus. Remember, the Hall of Famers of our faith are thundering and cheering for you to run with the kind of obedience and faith they had. They think that you, too, can do it!
