THE SECRET // JUNE 28, 2022
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.
The book of Hebrews celebrates some of the most inspiring stories of the old testament -- heroes and heroines of faith who have gone before us -- including Abraham. When Abraham obeyed, he stepped into an adventurous life with God: by faith, he received an inheritance without knowing his direction; by faith, he took God at his word; by faith, he was willing to make sacrifices. Abraham left everything to follow God into the unknown. But what was his secret? How did he train? How did he finish and finish well? Abraham had an "even though" faith.
What is an "even though" faith? Well, Hebrews tells us faith is evidence of things hoped for and the assurance of things not seen. It's not blind: there's evidence for it. And it's also not denial: it's a strong conviction where we know that we know that we know. An "even though" faith is a faith that hopes despite the fact that: in the face of reality, an "even though" faith understands there is a greater reality found in Jesus. It's a faith that understands that in the face of the natural, there's a supernatural God. It means we can face into those hard times, those challenging situations, walking by faith ... even though ... in the natural it seems impossible.
Do you have an "even though" faith? A faith that continues to move you forward even when it doesn't make sense? We all have an “even though.” What's yours? Even though I’m struggling through family crisis ... even though I feel stressed by work ... even though my health is failing me ... even though my finances are limited ... you will always have challenges in life. Will you decide to obey when God says "Go?" Follow Abraham's example, and trust that as God worked wonders for this great man of faith, he will work wonders for you, too!
