FACING THE IMPOSSIBLE // JUNE 30, 2022
By faith, Abraham, even though he was past age -- and Sarah herself was barren -- was enabled to become a father because he considered him faithful who had made the promise.
Not only did God tell Abraham to go to the land he would show him, but he also promised to make him a great nation. He was 75 years old when he got that promise, yet Sarah wouldn't become pregnant until he was 100 years old, and Sarah was 90! She was barren, there was no Viagra, she was well past menopause age, and it definitely seemed impossible that they would still have a child! Sarah even laughed to herself about the idea of having a child at their ages. But God was true to his word, even in the face of the impossible: their son, Isaac, fathered Jacob, who became the patriarch of the Israelites, fulfilling God's word that he would make Abraham into a great nation.
How often in our lives do we face into the impossible? Maybe we think we missed it, we're too young, too inexperienced, unqualified, made too many mistakes, are not educated enough or think there's no way God could do this for me. Abraham and Sarah waited 25 years from when God gave them the promise and when they had Isaac. Know what happened in between? They tried to make it happen on their own! Sarah "gave" Abraham her maidservant because she thought it was impossible and thought they could raise a baby Abraham made with her! Ishmael was born, but he was not the child of the promise, and God made that clear. They'd made a mistake, and the repercussions of that decision are still felt today in many of the conflicts that happen in the Middle East. Yet none of that disqualified them from God's promise. They still leaned in even though.
Have you made some mistakes or crazy decisions? Know that your mistakes don't disqualify you for God's call on your life, either. You might have made some Ishmaels, but nothing will stop God's plans and purposes for you. You can still choose to walk by faith, you can still lean in to what he has for you, and you can still face into the impossible! Today, choose to feed your "even though" faith, and watch God do what he does best!
