Person, Power and Place – Day 1

WHO IS HE? // AUGUST 15, 2022

“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Matthew 16:15, 16

While traveling with his disciples, Jesus asked a critical question. The first time he framed it, he asked, "Who do people say the Son of Man [aka Jesus] is?" After hearing the list of possible identities, he then pointed the question directly at his disciples. "Who do you say that I am?" Peter's reply? "You are the Son of God!"

This is one of the most important questions in life. Who is Jesus? People have a lot of opinions: A teacher. A prophet. A historical figure. Ultimately, it is not about who the left wing or the right wing say he is. It's not about what the Republicans or the Democrats or your professor or your friends say about him. It's personal. Jesus gets personal: Who do YOU say Jesus is?

The Church is built upon Peter's confession. Jesus is the Son of God! This reality changed the trajectory of Peter's life and transformed him from the inside out. What you believe about Jesus matters. So who do YOU say that he is? If today someone asked what you believe about Jesus, how would you respond? Carefully think this through and then ask God to give you the opportunity to share your love for Jesus with someone this week.
